They haven\u2019t been manufactured in North America since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>More than 125 million next-generation meters have already been installed around the world. This technology has become the industry standard.<\/p>\n<p>The next-generation meters we\u2019re now installing automatically register electricity-use data and transmit it to us; that\u2019s what we call remote meter reading. A Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec meter reader doesn\u2019t have to go to your house anymore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>BENEFITS OF NEXT-GENERATION METER<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Your bills will be based on your actual consumption rather than on estimates, as could happen with the old technology.<\/li>\n<li>If your meter is indoors or hard to get to, you won\u2019t have to be home to let a meter reader in.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll no longer have to report a power failure because, with the advanced technology, Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec will be informed automatically. We can thus determine the scope of the outage and restore service more quickly.<\/li>\n<li>The new technology offers a range of functions that could be implemented in the future. For instance, you could monitor your electricity use and manage it wisely.<\/li>\n<li>There will be hundreds of tons less CO2\u2014one of the main greenhouse gases\u2014produced every year, since we\u2019ll be able to retire a large number of cars currently being used by meter readers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>APPROVED BY THE R\u00c9GIE DE L\u2019\u00c9NERGIE<\/h2>\n<p>The R\u00e9gie de l\u2019\u00e9nergie has approved the free replacement of Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec meters with next-generation meters for the whole territory served by Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BACKGROUND Most of Hydro-Qu\u00e9bec\u2019s 3.8 million meters are electromechanical, with a spinning disc and several dials.
